* Style sheet for the W3C specifications *
*
* Special classes handled by this style sheet include:
*
* Indices
* - .toc for the Table of Contents (
)
* + for the section numbers
*   - #toc for the Table of Contents (
)
*   - ul.index for Indices (term, in § N.M)
* - table.index for Index Tables (e.g. for properties or elements)
*
* Structural Markup
*   - table.data for general data tables
*     -> use 'scope' attribute, <colgroup>,
, and
for best results !
*     -> use
for extra-complex tables
*     -> use
for paragraph-length cell content
*     -> use
when manual line breaks/indentation would help readability
*   - dl.switch for switch statements
* - ol.algorithm for algorithms (helps to visualize nesting)
* - .figure and .caption (HTML4) and figure and figcaption (HTML5)
*     -> .sidefigure for right-floated figures
*   - ins/del
* -> ins/del.c### for candidate and proposed changes (amendments)
*
* Code
*   - pre and code
*
* Special Sections
* - .note for informative notes (div, p, span, aside, details)
* - .example for informative examples (div, p, pre, span)
* - .issue for issues (div, p, span)
* - .advisement for loud normative statements (div, p, strong)
* - .annoying-warning for spec obsoletion notices (div, aside, details)
* - .correction for "candidate corrections" (div, aside, details, section)
* - .addition for "candidate additions" (div, aside, details, section)
* - .correction.proposed for "proposed corrections" (div, aside, details, section)
* - .addition.proposed for "proposed additions" (div, aside, details, section)
*
* Definition Boxes
*   - pre.def   for WebIDL definitions
* - table.def for tables that define other entities (e.g. CSS properties)
* - dl.def for definition lists that define other entitles (e.g. HTML elements)
*
* Numbering
* - .secno for section numbers in .toc and headings (3.2)
*   - .marker for source-inserted example/figure/issue numbers (Issue 4)
*   - ::before styled for CSS-generated issue/example/figure numbers:
* -> Documents wishing to use this only need to add
*        figcaption::before,
*        .caption::before { content: "Figure "  counter(figure) " ";  }
*        .example::before { content: "Example " counter(example) " "; }
*        .issue::before   { content: "Issue "   counter(issue) " ";   }
*
* Header Stuff (ignore, just don't conflict with these classes)
* - .head for the header
* - .copyright for the copyright
*
* Outdated warning for old specs
*
* Miscellaneous
* - .overlarge for things that should be as wide as possible, even if
* that overflows the body text area. This can be used on an item or
* on its container, depending on the effect desired.
* Note that this styling basically doesn't help at all when printing,
* since A4 paper isn't much wider than the max-width here.
* It's better to design things to fit into a narrower measure if possible.
*
*   - js-added ToC jump links (see fixup.js)
*

The section addresses the LEWG feedback. While we always had in mind that with
<c- n>get_element</c->
facility we can make tuple-like generic enough, we assumed it to be developed as a separate proposal.
However, based on the LEWG poll (§ 8.2 Library Evolution Telecon 2024-01-23), the
<c- n>get_element</c->
paper should enable
user-defined tuples to make its motivation strong enough.

So, let’s go to the problem statement. Today the C++ standard defines tuple-like types as only 5 types from
<c- n>std</c->
namespace:

<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>tuple</c->

<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>pair</c->

<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>array</c->

<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>complex</c->
(allowed since C++26)

<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>ranges</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>subrange</c->

That sounds like a huge limitation for a generic library because, in principle, user-defined types could be treated like tuples.
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>tuple_size</c->
and
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>tuple_element</c->
are already customizable by users. The problematic part is
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>get</c->
which is not a customization point.

Furthermore, there is already partial support for user-defined tuples in the language. For example the structured binding language feature has special rules for finding a
<c- n>get</c->
function for an arbitrary type (in a nutshell, either as a
non-static-member-function or by argument-dependent lookup).

Unfortunately, rules are different in different places in the standard today. For example, has-tuple-element exposition-only concept for
<c- n>elements_view</c->
allows only the 5 tuple-like types listed above and does not consider user-defined types.

[P2165R4] added constraints for existing API (like
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>apply</c->
,
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>tuple_cat</c->
, etc.) to take tuple-like and also
provides better compatibility between tuple-like objects by adding extra APIs, which is great. The unfortunate part of the story,
however, is that the mentioned APIs are still limited by the definition of the tuple-like concept (5 standard types).

Since the proposed
<c- n>get_element</c->
API is a customization point object we can use it to extend the tuple protocol to user-defined
types, and since this facility is using ADL lookup for
<c- n>get</c->
it is not going to be a breaking change.

Of course,
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>apply</c->
is just an example.
<c- n>my_tuple_like</c->
would work with any API that supports tuple-like types.

1.2. The original motivating use case

creates a plenty of opportunities. With special views, such as
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>ranges</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>elements_view</c->
, we can
specify which tuple elements to access when iterating over collections of such objects. However,
we cannot easily use a predicate to make a decision based on only some of tuple elements, for example keys or values.

Let’s consider the following example:

<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>vector</c-><c- o><</c-><c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>tuple</c-><c- o><</c-><c- b>int</c-><c- p>,</c-> <c- b>int</c-><c- o>>></c-> <c- n>v</c-><c- p>{{</c-><c- mi>3</c-><c- p>,</c-><c- mi>1</c-><c- p>},{</c-><c- mi>2</c-><c- p>,</c-><c- mi>4</c-><c- p>},{</c-><c- mi>1</c-><c- p>,</c-><c- mi>7</c-><c- p>}};</c->
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>ranges</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>sort</c-><c- p>(</c-><c- n>v</c-><c- p>,</c-> <c- p>[](</c-><c- k>auto</c-> <c- n>x</c-><c- p>,</c-> <c- k>auto</c-> <c- n>y</c-><c- p>)</c->
<c- p>{</c->
    <c- c1>// key-based sorting</c->

As we can see, users should spell some extra syntax out to achieve the necessary goal,
comparing to what is described in § 1.2.2 The desired approach. The example above can be considered
simplified; in real practice users might also need to think of e.g. adding references
to lambda parameters to avoid copying.

The code above can be rewritten with structured binding:

<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>vector</c-><c- o><</c-><c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>tuple</c-><c- o><</c-><c- b>int</c-><c- p>,</c-> <c- b>int</c-><c- o>>></c-> <c- n>v</c-><c- p>{{</c-><c- mi>3</c-><c- p>,</c-><c- mi>1</c-><c- p>},{</c-><c- mi>2</c-><c- p>,</c-><c- mi>4</c-><c- p>},{</c-><c- mi>1</c-><c- p>,</c-><c- mi>7</c-><c- p>}};</c->

Counting-based sorts, and Radix Sort in particular, provide another motivating use case.
Today it is not possible to have a C++ standard conformant implementation that uses
Radix Sort algorithm underneath because the complexity of
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>sort</c->
is defined as
the number of comparator calls, while counting-based sorts do not use a comparator at all.

However, the industry needs Radix Sort for performance reasons. Implementations of C++ standard
parallel algorithms, such as oneAPI Data Parallel C++ Library (oneDPL) and CUDA Thrust, use Radix Sort
conditionally under the hood of
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>sort</c->
, checking data types of the input and the comparator.
In this case, a special comparator is of no help to sort values by keys, and projections seem the only viable option.

Alternative name for the proposed API could be
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>ranges</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>get</c->
. Unfortunately,
this name is already taken for
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>ranges</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>subrange</c->
overload.

Potentially
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>ranges</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>get</c->
could be repurposed for the proposed CPO with minimal API break
for tricky scenarios only while still working as expected in existing reasonable use cases, as explained below.
But we (likely) could not avoid an ABI break.

As
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>get_element</c->
have got more support than
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>ranges</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>get</c->
at § 8.1 SG9 polls, Issaquah 2023, the rest of this section
is kept primarily for recording the evaluated and rejected alternative.

3.1. What could be done to use
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>ranges</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>get</c->
name

In all major standard library implementations (GCC, LLVM, Microsoft) the
<c- n>get</c->
overload for
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>ranges</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>subrange</c->
is defined in
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>ranges</c->
. Adding another definition of
<c- n>get</c->
to
the same namespace would obviously create name ambiguity.

However, library implementors could move the current
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>ranges</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>get</c->
function to an implementation specific
namespace (e.g.,
<c- n>__detail</c->
) and inherit (possibly privately)
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>ranges</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>subrange</c->
from an empty tag class
(e.g.,
<c- n>adl_hook</c->
) defined in the same namespace.
That way
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>ranges</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>__detail</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>get</c->
can still be found by ADL for
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>ranges</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>subrange</c->
, and at the same time,
the
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>ranges</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>get</c->
name becomes free to be redefined as a CPO that could successfully find a necessary overload
for
<c- n>get</c->
, including the case when the argument is a
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>ranges</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>subrange</c->
.
Moreover, the proposed
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>ranges</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>get</c->
CPO type could have a parameter pack in the interface to cover the use case when
the current
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>ranges</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>get</c->
function is used with explicit template arguments.

Please see the example that explains the idea and shows how it might look like. A full implementation with examples

where
<c- n>sub_r</c->
is
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>ranges</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>subrange</c->
object.

The API breaking change appears when
<c- n>get</c->
has all explicit template arguments for
<c- n>subrange</c->
,
i.e.,
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>ranges</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>get</c-><c- o><</c-><c- n>Iarg</c-><c- p>,</c-> <c- n>Sarg</c-><c- p>,</c-> <c- n>Karg</c-><c- o>></c-><c- p>(</c-><c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>ranges</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>subrange</c-><c- o><</c-><c- n>Iarg</c-><c- p>,</c-> <c- n>Sarg</c-><c- p>,</c-> <c- n>Karg</c-><c- o>></c-><c- p>{})</c->
. The problem is
with the last
<c- n>Karg</c->
argument, which is unrelated to
<c- n>tuple_size_v</c->
and
<c- n>tuple_element_t</c->
of the subrange.
Even if we say that the proposed backward compatible CPO with
<c- n>Args</c-><c- p>...</c->
does not constraint
<c- k>sizeof</c-><c- p>...(</c-><c- n>Args</c-><c- p>)</c->
and ignores the tail outside
<c- n>tuple_size_v</c-><c- o><</c-><c- n>subrange</c-><c- o>></c->
, it doesn’t help
for the mentioned use case because
<c- n>K</c->
of
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>ranges</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>subrange</c->
is a non-type template parameter.
Anyway, this scenario doesn’t look common because explicit template parameters are used relatively rarely
and furthermore,
<c- n>K</c->
has the default argument that is substituted based on a sentinel.

Definitely such a change would break the ABI for
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>ranges</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>get</c->
because the fully qualified name of
this function would change from what is in C++ standard library implementations today.
But we think that that ABI break would have low impact because
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>ranges</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>get</c->
is likely
inlined and so doesn’t create a visible symbol in translation units.
We could imagine other tricky scenario where the API might be broken when
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>ranges</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>get</c->
is used for something else but call. For example:
<c- o>&</c-><c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>ranges</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>get</c-><c- o><</c-><c- mi>0</c-><c- o>></c->
,
<c- k>decltype</c-><c- p>(</c-><c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>ranges</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>get</c-><c- o><</c-><c- mi>0</c-><c- o>></c-><c- p>)</c->
, etc. However, these scenarios don’t look common.

Since the
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>ranges</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>subrange</c->
API is relatively new, perhaps only a small amount
of users would be affected but it can not be predicted accurately.

[P2547R1] uses
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>get</c->
as the example and a good candidate to be a customizable function.
Authors plan to ship the customizable functions proposal first and deal with customizing
standard library functions later. That means we should not expect that examples in this paper
automatically would be transformed to customizable functions when it will land.

Moreover, at this time the authors of [P2547R1] don’t see how to introduce customizable functions
with the same names (e.g.
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>get</c->
) without the ABI break, so they will likely need to choose
different names.

[P2141R1]'s main goal is allow aggregates being interpreted as Tuple-Like. At the same time, it touches
the tuple-like concept making it as generic as for the types structured binding can work with. It also adds
a yet another
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>get</c->
overload that works with any Tuple-Like object except those that are already in
the
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c->
namespace.

With [P2141R1] being adopted
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>get</c->
does the right thing and works with Tuple-Like object, so we may use

the unqualified
<c- n>get</c->
call.

Independently of [P2141R1]
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>get_element</c->
brings its own value by covering the described motivation use-cases.
Furthermore, in the standard there are already precedences of having two similar things with slightly different
semantics, for example,
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>less</c->
and
<c- n>std</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>ranges</c-><c- o>::</c-><c- n>less</c->
, where the latter is not even a CPO.

[P2141R1] also gives another way to generalize the tuple-like concept (via structured binding).
